And if doctors don't like any of those choices, there's a new class of drugs called SGLT-2 inhibitors that work though a different mechanism. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ  ) got the first one approved earlier this year. Since it's a new class of drugs, doctors are likely to be cautious, but given the choice between unknown real-world experience and Avandia's history, I think most doctors would choose the unknown.

Pfizer's blood thinner, Eliquis, was approved late last year. The drug, which Pfizer sells with Bristol-Myers Squibb (NYSE: BMY  ) , has multibillion-dollar potential because the current offering, warfarin, is difficult to use. While doctors are clamoring for a replacement, drugmakers developed three. In addition to Eliquis, there's also Johnson & Johnson's (NYSE: JNJ  ) Xarelto and Boehringer Ingelheim's Pradaxa. The blood thinner market is so large, I think there's plenty of room for all three.

Merck's diabetes drug pair, Januvia and Janumet, paid off in a big way for investors last year with more than $5.7 billion in sales. However, Januvia's sales dipped surprisingly in the first quarter, and more headaches could be on the way. Johnson & Johnson's (NYSE: JNJ  ) newly approved diabetes treatment, Invokana, has already shown some benefits over Januvia in certain clinical trials and could be poised to take a bite out of Merck's sales. Along with the FDA's investigation into pancreatitis concerns for Januvia patients, Merck's star drug isn't having its best time right now. Any threat to its billions of dollars in sales could drastically hurt this firm's future.

Eat your heart out Foundation Medicine Inc. (NASDAQ:FMI). And WebMD Health Corp. (NASDAQ:WBMD)? Don't even bother trying. CollabRx Inc. (NASDAQ:CLRX) has built a better mousetrap, and if yesterday's announcement is a sign of things to come, CLRX could prove to be a very compelling investment.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

It wouldn't be fair to say there's nothing like it "out there", because there is. A company called Foundation Medicine Inc. (NASDAQ:FMI) has developed a similar/comparable app. The CLRX version of the solution appears superior in most ways, however, if for no other reason than because of the projected revenue growth the company is apt to see.

Top Medical Companies To Watch In Right Now: Acceleron Pharma Inc (XLRN)

Acceleron Pharma Inc., incorporated on June 13, 2003, is a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery, development and commercialization of protein therapeutics for cancer and rare diseases. The Company research focuses on the biology of the Transforming Growth Factor-Beta (TGF-b) protein superfamily, a large and diverse group of molecules that are key regulators in the growth and repair of tissues throughout the human body. By coupling its discovery and development expertise, including its knowledge of the TGF-b superfamily, with its internal protein engineering and manufacturing capabilities, it has built a productive research and development platform that has generated clinical and preclinical protein therapeutic candidates with mechanisms of action.

The Company focuses on discovering and developing protein therapeutics that target a group of approximately 30 secreted proteins, or ligands, that are collectively referred to as the TGF-b superfamily. These ligands bind to subsets of 12 different receptors on the surface of cells, triggering intra-cellular changes in gene expression that guide cell growth and differentiation. The TGF-b superfamily ligands and their receptors represent an under-explored and diverse set of drug targets with the potential to yield therapeutics that modulate the growth and repair of diseased cells and tissues.

The Company has three internally discovered protein therapeutic candidates that are being studied in 12 ongoing Phase 2 clinical trials, focused on cancer and rare diseases. The Company two advanced protein therapeutic candidates, sotatercept and ACE-536, promote red blood cell production through a novel mechanism. Together with its collaboration partner, Celgene Corporation, the Company is developing sotatercept and ACE-536 to treat anemia and associated complications in patients with b-thalassemia and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). These red blood cell disorders are generally unresponsive to approved dru! gs. The Company third clinical stage protein therapeutic candidate, dalantercept, is designed to inhibit blood vessel formation through a mechanism that is distinct from, and potentially synergistic with, the dominant class of cancer drugs that inhibit blood vessel formation, the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) pathway inhibitors. The Company is developing dalantercept primarily for use in combination with these products to produce better outcomes for cancer patients.

The Company and Celgene have conducted six human clinical trials with sotatercept in over 160 healthy volunteers and cancer patients. The Company has conducted one clinical trial with ACE-536 in healthy volunteers. In these studies, both sotatercept and ACE-536 caused a dose-dependent increase in the number of red blood cells. Based on these results, the Company and Celgene have initiated Phase II clinical trials with each of these protein therapeutic candidates in b-thalassemia and MDS. In the ongoing trial of sotatercept in patients with b-thalassemia, the Company has observed encouraging, dose-dependent increases in hemoglobin in a subset of patients at the two lowest dose levels.

Sotatercept is a soluble receptor fusion protein consisting of the extracellular domain of the activin receptor type IIA (ActRIIA) linked to the Fc domain of human IgG1. Sotatercept acts as a protein trap for TGF-b superfamily ligands that signal through the ActRIIA receptor. Sotatercept has increased red blood cells in multiple clinical trials. ACE-536 is a soluble receptor fusion protein consisting of a modified extracellular domain of the activin receptor type IIB (ActRIIB) linked to the Fc domain of human IgG1.

Redpoint Bio Corporation (Redpoint), incorporated in August 1995, is a development-stage biotechnology company. The Company leverages discoveries in the molecular biology of taste to discover and develop taste modulators for the food and beverage industries. Its food and beverage program has been focused on identifying flavor modifiers that improve the taste of ingredients. In June 2009, the Company announced that it had identified an all-natural sweetness enhancer, RP44. RP44 is Reb-C (rebaudioside C), a component of the stevia plant.

Sweetness Enhancer Program

Redpoint announced that it had identified RP44, an all-natural sweetness enhancer, in June 2009. In January 2010, it disclosed that RP44 is Reb-C (rebaudioside C), a component of the stevia plant. RP44 is derived from material found in the side stream of the Reb A production process. A purified component of stevia known as Reb A has received regulatory approval in the United States. Unlike Reb A, RP44 has a low intrinsic level of sweetness and therefore is not useful as a sweetener.

Diabetes and Obesity Drug Discovery Program

The Company initial programs focused on the modulation of the TRPm5 ion channel, a signaling element in taste sensation, in order to discover compounds that modulate the taste of food and beverage products. Redpoint initiated a program designed to leverage the research it had already conducted on the discovery of modulators of the TRPm5 ion channel to further explore opportunities for the discovery of diabetes or obesity therapeutics. TRPm5 modulators discovered at Redpoint have been shown to elicit the secretion of hormones known to play roles in metabolism in relevant model systems.
