The best thing about the stock market is that you can make money ineither direction. Historically, stock indexes have tended to trend up over the long term. But when you look at individual stocks, you'll find plenty that lose money over the long haul. According to hedge fund institution Blackstar Funds, even with dividendsincluded, between 1983 and 2006, 64% of stocks underperformed the Russell 3000, a broad-scope market index.
A large influx of short-sellers shouldn't be a condemning factor to any company, but it could be a red flag from traders that something may not be as cut-and-dried as it appears. Let's look at three companies that have seen a rapid increase in the number of shares sold short and see whether traders are blowing smoke or if their worry has some merit.

Free cash flow is a favorite parameter of value investors. It seems to make sense, because the value of a company is determined by how much cash it can generate over time. Value investors have developed discounted cash flow (DCF) models to estimate the value of companies.
- [By Canadian Value]
As many of our clients know, Jensen focuses primarily on the discounted cash flow (DCF) method to value equities. Our long held belief is that the intrinsic value of a business is the present value of the cash flows the company is expected to pay its shareholders in the future. The remainder of this paper explores some of the advantages and disadvantages of using either DCF or multiples and outlines why we believe DCF is the more fundamentally sound way to value equities.

First quarter results in line with expectations.
In the first quarter of 2015, the company reported an increased revenue of $958 million (3% increase y-o-y) that translated to an earnings of $0.27 per share. As per the call, the revenue for the storage business declined 6% sequentially but was in accordance with company's inital expectations. As I mentioned above, the boom in SSD business and continued share gains in the HDDs were the primary revenue drivers in storage. Besides storage, the networking business of the company saw flat revenue as the management had expected before going into the quarter. All in all, the first quarter results were in alignment with the management expectations and hence did not spark much investor activity on the exchange.
Stabilizing PC demand
Together, Western Digital and Seagate accounted for 36% of Marvell's revenue in the last fiscal year. While this might look like a disadvantage to some, given that the PC market hasn't been in the best of health lately, it isn't the case. The PC market was down 9.8% in 2013, but the forecast for the current year is relatively better. Shipments of traditional desktop and notebook PCs are slated to drop 6.6% this year, according to Gartner. This signifies that the PC market is gradually stabilizing.
Moreover, the retirement of Windows XP by Microsoft will also force businesses to upgrade to newer systems, thereby reversing the PC's decline, to an extent. In one of my previous articles on Hewlett-Packard, I mentioned the fact that the migration from Windows XP OS led to a growth of 7% in quarterly revenue for the company. So, as far as PC market is concerned, it is not a major reason for worry.

LSI is cheaper than it looks
When you stack up LSI stock against a couple of its larger competitors -- Marvell Technology (NASDAQ: MRVL ) and Texas Instruments (NASDAQ: TXN ) , it's not immediately clear that LSI is a bargain. Right off the bat, you can see that the stock sells for 30 times earnings -- while TI costs only 23.3 times earnings, and Marvell costs an even 22.0.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Alan Brochstein]
Not too surprisingly, supply is starting to increase. We have seen some companies enter the space by expanding their own businesses, but there have been some reverse mergers lately too. I had mentioned Refill Energy (REFG.PK) recently (soon to be Medical Cannabis Financial Group), but earlier this month Promap (PMAP.OB) acquired 94% of Advanced Cannabis Solutions (link to 8-K). As an aside, I think that this company is worth considering given the management team and the business model. Investors should keep in the back of their mind that there are many companies that are quietly developing their business models and could become public over time, especially as the regulatory and legal landscapes improve.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Freelance Individual Investor]
Recently, there have been a spate of articles depicting Aruba Networks (ARUN) as just another player in the Wi-Fi space. Many of these detractors focused on GAAP losses, high executive compensation costs due to higher than normal stock option grants, and increasing competition from lower cost providers in some segments of their business. There is definitely some merit to these criticisms. And ARUN is attempting to address these concerns.
- [By Wallace Witkowski]
Aruba Networks Inc. (ARUN) shares fell 6.5% to $18.75 on moderate volume even though the company reported adjusted fiscal third-quarter results of 20 cents a share on revenue of $188.8 million, against a Wall Street consensus forecast of 20 cents a share on revenue of $180.8 million.

- [By Roberto Pedone]
One network equipment player that's quickly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Aruba Networks (ARUN), which provides enterprise mobility solutions. This stock is off to a weak start in 2013, with shares off by 11%.
If you take a look at the chart for Aruba Networks, you'll notice that this stock just formed a major bottom chart pattern, after buyers stepped in to support the price over the last month and change from $17 to $16.25 a share. Following that bottom, shares of ARUN have now started to rebound higher and move back above its 50-day moving average of $17.73 a share. That move is quickly pushing shares of ARUN within range of triggering a major breakout trade.
Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ARUN if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $19.16 a share to its 200-day moving average at $19.63 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 2.12 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then ARUN will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from May that started near $22 a share. Any high-volume move above $22 will then give ARUN a chance to hit $24 to $25 a share.
Traders can look to buy ARUN off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below support at $17 a share or below $16.25 a share if you want to give it more room. One can also buy ARUN off strength once it takes out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Jessica Alling]
Elsewhere, Pfizer is evaluating its continued partnership on an experimental oxycodone capsule, Remoxy. The drug is an extended-release formula that is targeted at reducing abuse of the painkiller. After years of setbacks and postponements for FDA approval, Pfizer is weighing its options. Its partners for the drug, Pain Therapeutics (NASDAQ: PTIE ) and Durect, have both fallen heavily due to the news, with Pain Therapeutics falling more than 50% -- its largest decline ever.
