Most American workers don't turn to tweets, Facebook messages or LinkedIn updates for information about their retirement-savings plans — but they might be missing out by not doing so.

As saving for retirement becomes an increasing worry, companies are using social-media sites as an additional way to reach young workers and supplement information that is on their website and other traditional channels.

In a survey of nearly 2,100 American workers eligible for an employer-sponsored defined-contribution plan, just 6% reported using social media to glean advice about their retirement savings plan. But younger age groups did so at more than twice that rate, which may provide an opportunity for firms looking to spread the word on savings to the Gen Y and Gen X crowd.

    FBR & Co.‘s�William Bird, who follows the shares of old media dinosaurs�Gannett (GCI), �Meredith�(MDP),�News�(NWSA), and�The New York Times�(NYT), today offers the findings of a survey of 2,041 adults in the U.S. from March 12th to March 17th.

    Bird has an Outperform rating on shares of Gannett, and Market Perform ratings on the other three names.

    The upshot of the survey is that a third of young readers don’t read print papers, and are more and more flocking to online news outlets.

    The survey, conducted with the help of Clear Voice Research LLC, suggests to Bird a “steady structural pressure on print, a tip of the spear demographic problem for print circulation, and slow magazine tablet adoption�� negative as tablets offer a better business model for magazines.”

    More specifically, there is “value destruction” as more and more people trade from print to digital editioins of publications:

    The survey suggests that structural pressure on consumer newspaper readership is a touch above�that of magazines. Over the next year, print newspaper usage is expected to decline a net 5% (i.e.,�6% expect to use more versus 11% who expect to use less). A total of 11% of respondents said they plan to use print newspapers less and 10% said they plan to �use print magazines less. This was exactly offset by the percentage of respondents who said they�plan to consume online newspapers more (11%) and those who plan to consume online magazines�more (10%). With $1 of print ad spend translating to $0.25 in digital, these results are supportive of �continued print-to-digital value destruction.

    Younger readers tend to be more inclined to dump print, says FBR:

    Gannett (GCI) operates as a media and marketing solutions company in the U.S. and internationally. This stock closed up 5% at $29.08 in Monday's trading session.

    From a technical perspective, GCI ripped sharply higher here above-average volume. This spike higher on Monday is quickly pushing shares of GCI within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if GCI manages to take out its 200-day moving average of $29.37 to some more resistance at $29.80 with high volume.

     

    Traders should now look for long-biased trades in GCI as long as it's trending above Monday's intraday low of $27.85 or above $27 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that's near or above 2.28 million shares. If that breakout gets underway soon, then GCI will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at its 50-day moving average of $31.47 to $32.90. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give GCI a chance to tag $34.

    Answer: I�� actually a satisfied AT&T wireless subscriber, with five devices across the family connected. I think the DirecTV (NYSE: DTV) deal will provide a boost to growth.

    I think it and Verizon will continue to dominate the US market. I like the yield and the consistent divided growth. I rate AT&T a buy under 35.

    I do like Verizon’s “big deal” to consolidate Verizon Wireless ownership versus AT&T’s move for DirecTV.

    I don’t think, from a portfolio perspective, that they’re mutually exclusive.

    Most recently, the company took a 27.3% stake in cable operator Charter Communications (NASDAQ: CHTR  ) . The deal cost Liberty $2.62 �billion in cash with proceeds from the Starz spinoff. Charter is the eighth biggest pay-TV provider in the United States. After a period of struggle, Charter is quickly approaching profitability -- an effect of a very capable management team that Maffei strongly supports. Liberty's motive was probably the seemingly endless demand for broadband services in the country.

    A dose of reality
    Along with airlines, the cable industry consistently ranks among the worst for customer service, year in, year out. The animosity consumers feel toward the cable industry is across the board -- Time Warner Cable finds itself on most of these lists, along with competitors including Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA  ) and Charter Communications (NASDAQ: CHTR  ) . Both Comcast and Charter have the distinction of owning even lower customer service ratings than Time Warner Cable, and that's saying something.
