All eyes of the world are on Colorado, which allowed the legal sales of marijuana for recreational use. It also became the first Government in the World to control and regulate marijuana, also known as Cannabis, which is a preparation of the Cannabis plant intended for use as a psychoactive drug and as medicine.

BeginningWednesday(Jan.1), 21 and over became eligible to buy marijuana legally for the first time anywhere in the State. The new law could be an alternative to the drug war, generate the kind of tax dollars that state government hopes and save the costs of locking up drug offenders. The Colorado Legislative Council estimates marijuana will generate $67 million in tax revenue annually.

Advisors' Opinion:

There's a major shift in the kinds of things Americans do to entertain themselves. Just ask the folks at AMC Networks Inc. (NASDAQ:AMCX), SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. (NYSE:SEAS), Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:CMCSK), and pretty soon, the Independent Film Development Corporation (OTCMKTS:IFLM). These organizations exist to keep their finger on the pulse of what makes entertainment-seeking consumers want, and it's clear from some of the programming choices and decisions these companies are making - and doing well with - that the companies who deliver the new, edgier product stand to earn the most revenue for doing so.

Financial results and news about lawsuits dominates the latest headlines for theme park stocks SeaWorld Entertainment Inc (NYSE: SEAS), Six Flags Entertainment Corp (NYSE: SIX), Cedar Fair, L.P. (NYSE: FUN) and small capIndependent Film Development Corporation (OTCMKTS: IFLM). Moreover, all of these theme park stocks are looking pretty good either because of their news or recent performance:

  • [By James E. Brumley]

On the battlefield, you can always tell when the commanding officer is close to beginning a major assault when he starts to move pieces of military hardware around to maximize their effectiveness in light of the battle plan. The same idea applies in the business world - when personnel additions are made, and people are moved around, it's usually the beginning of something big. That's why investors may want to prep themselves for something big from Independent Film Development Corporation (OTCMKTS:IFLM). The company placed a new CEO today after naming a CFO last week, and moved the previous CEO over to the lead role of real estate operations [which was always the plan]. So what? All these changes are an omen that IFLM is finally ready to begin its frontal assault on the likes of amusement park names such as Cedar Fair, L.P. (NYSE:FUN), or even against the venerable The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS). But nobody beats Walt Disney at its own game, you say? We'll see.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

When most investors hear the term "amusement park", one of two names comes to mind. The first one, of course, is DisneyWorld (or DisneyLand, depending on your locale), which of course is owned by The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), and probably set the bar for all other theme parks to come after it. Thrill-seekers of a slightly different age - ones without kids anyway - may recall fond memories of trips to Kings Island, Kings Dominion, or perhaps a visit to what some consider the best amusement park in the world, Cedar Point. They're all owned by Cedar Fair, L.P. (NYSE:FUN). And by most accounts, those leading theme park companies have provided equally compelling gains over the year for shareholders of DIS and FUN. But, there's a shift in what amusement park visitors are now seeking, and while Walt Disney Company or Cedar Fair aren't apt to be put out of business anytime soon, there's no denying that newcomer Independent Film Development Corporation (OTCMKTS:IFLM) - aka IndyFilmCorp - is better positioned to satisfy consumers' new definition of a thrilling theme park. Likewise, shares of IFLM may be poised to offer equally thrilling returns.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Gold fell below the key $1,300 level Thursday, raising new fears about whether the yellow metal's rally to begin 2014 is now over. Yet, mining companies fared well today, with silver specialists Hecla Mining (NYSE: HL  ) and Pan American Silver (NASDAQ: PAAS  ) posting solid gains of around 2% Thursday. What explains the disconnect that sent SPDR Gold Shares (NYSEMKT: GLD  ) down, but Market Vectors Gold Miners (NYSEMKT: GDX  ) up?

  • [By Rich Duprey]

Even with silver's crash we haven't heard about significant cutbacks like those its gold mining counterparts have undertaken.Hecla Mining (NYSE: HL  ) ended up cutting its dividend because it was tied to the price of silver. Also, just as we've seen with Newmont Mining (NYSE: NEM  ) and Australia's Newcrest Mining, which suspended its dividend altogether, we haven't seen capex budgets slashed anywhere near to what's occurring at Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX  ) , though that's not necessarily of its own accord.

  • [By Selena Maranjian]

Tudor Investment reduced its stake in lots of companies, including Nuance Communications (NASDAQ: NUAN  ) . Nuance, specializing in speech-recognition software, took a dive in April after posting disappointing earnings. The company is threatened by weak demand, shrinking margins, and intensifying competition, as well as a change in how it's compensated, with more focus on usage. The stock's low valuation, with a forward P/E near 13 comparing favorably with its five-year average P/E of 42, makes it look attractive, but some doubt how quickly Nuance can grow. Notable investor Carl Icahn sees potential in it, though, perhaps intrigued by its potential in the health-care field, helping doctors create or update electronic health records.

On the other hand, food manufacturer TreeHouse Foods (THS) has witnessed higher demand for its products. Its fourth-quarter revenue surged 11.4% over last year as revenue clocked in at $660.3 million. The acquisitions of Cains Foods and Associated Brands last year and an increase in volumes drove this revenue gain. The company also recently acquired Associated Brands, which added to its private-label food product portfolio. Also, TreeHouse's launch of specialty teas enabled it to expand its single-serve coffee business. Hence, this company provides tough competition to other food players.

    Basic guidelines
In this series, I examine inventory using a simple rule of thumb: Inventory increases ought to roughly parallel revenue increases. If inventory bloats more quickly than sales grow, this might be a sign that expected sales haven't materialized. Is the current inventory situation at Wright Medical Group (Nasdaq: WMGI  ) out of line? To figure that out, start by comparing the company's inventory growth to sales growth. How is Wright Medical Group doing by this quick checkup? At first glance, pretty well. Trailing-12-month revenue decreased 5.3%, and inventory decreased 10.1%. Comparing the latest quarter to the prior-year quarter, the story looks decent. Revenue shrank 5.0%, and inventory shrank 10.1%. Over the sequential quarterly period, the trend looks OK but not great. Revenue dropped 2.5%, and inventory grew 0.4%.
