LONDON -- Stock index futures at 7 a.m. EDT indicate that the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI ) may open down by 0.38% this morning, while the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC ) may open 0.4% lower.
European stock markets continued to move lower this morning as new figures confirmed that the eurozone economy shrank by 0.2% in the first quarter of this year, pushing the single-currency zone back into recession. Worries also rose that stronger U.S. data may mean that the Federal Reserve will start to scale back its stimulus program as soon as September. At 7:15 a.m. EDT, the FTSE 100 was down by 1.4%, while Germany's DAX was 1.1% lower. In a surprise announcement this morning, the European Central Bank said that Latvia's application to join the euro had been successful, although it warned that "a significant part of the banking sector" relies on foreign deposits, especially from Russia. This has prompted fears that Latvia might eventually experience similar problems to those of Cyprus.

The countries with little domestic production pay a much higher premium for oil, and companies located all over the world will flock to capture those markets, even ones in the U.S. At the end of 2012, Valero (NYSE: VLO ) , Phillips 66 (NYSE: PSX ) and Marathon Petroleum (NYSE: MPC ) combined to export 531,000 barrels of refined petroleum products from American refiners to premium markets around the world. Furthermore, all three of these companies have stated that they intend to significantly expand export capacity in the upcoming years.

Some analysts have postulated that the crude could be shipped by rail. But Greg Gentry, Valero Energy's (NYSE: VLO) general manager in Port Arthur, Texas, disagrees, saying Canadian producers "would have to drop the price of their crude" if they were to ship by rail, according to the New Yorker article.

Netflix (NFLX) relies heavily on third parties -- primarily Cogent Communications (CCOI) -- to deliver content from its servers to Internet service providers. Traditionally, broadband companies and bandwidth providers like Cogent haven't charged one another, on the assumption that traffic that flows back and forth over their networks will even out over time.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Netflix's videos are streaming through Comcast's Internet service at their highest speeds in 17 months, thanks to a recent deal that bought Netflix a more direct connection to Comcast's (CMCSA) network. The data released Monday by Netflix (NFLX) may become another flash point in a debate about whether the Federal Communications Commission should draw up new rules to ensure that all online content providers are treated the same by Internet service providers. The equal-treatment doctrine, known as Net neutrality, has become a thornier topic since January when a federal appeals court overturned the FCC's regulations on the issue. Net neutrality is also drawing more attention as Comcast tries to gain approval of its proposed $45 billion purchase of Time Warner Cable (TWC), another large Internet service provider. As the world's largest Internet video subscription service, Netflix has long supported Net neutrality as a way to prevent online service providers from giving better treatment to websites willing to pay additional fees for the privilege. Nevertheless, Netflix agreed in mid-February to pay an undisclosed sum to Comcast Corp. to create a new avenue for its videos to reach Comcast's service. Netflix previously had been paying third-party vendors such as Cogent Communications Group (CCOI) and Akamai Technologies (AKAM) to deliver its content to Comcast. Some analysts suspect Netflix may be saving money by paying Comcast directly instead of the vendors, but the specifics remain unknown as part of a confidentiality agreement. The arrangement clearly seems to paying off for Netflix subscribers who are among the nearly 21 million households and businesses that rely on Comcast's high-speed Internet service to watch movies and television shows. Comcast delivered Netflix video at an average rate of 2.5 megabits per second during March. That was a 66 percent increase from a recent low of 1.51 megabits per second in January. The March perform

I went out on a limb last week, and now it's time to see how that decision played out.
I predicted that Noodles & Co. (NASDAQ: NDLS ) would close lower on the week. After seeing the fresh IPO more than double and command a $1.3 billion market cap far sooner than its fundamentals should allow, I figured it would be in for reality check. A negative Barron's piece kicked off the week in the seemingly appropriate bearish tone, but the shares did start to claw their way back later in the week. It wasn't enough. The shares fell 3% on the week. I was right. I predicted that the tech-heavy Nasdaq would outperform the Dow Jones Industrial Average. (DJINDICES: ^DJI ) . This has been a tricky call lately, so how did it play out this time? Well, the market closed nicely higher this week. The Nasdaq moved 3.5% higher, and the Dow managed to close just 2.2% higher. I was right. My final call was for Peregrine Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: PPHM ) to beat Wall Street's income estimates in its latest quarter. The upstart biotech tackling cancer through monoclonal antibodies has been posting blowout quarterly results over the past year, and I was banking on seeing the trend continue. Analysts were looking for a loss of $0.06 a share during the quarter, and it came through with exactly that. It wasn't a beat, though, so I was wrong. Two out of three? I can do better than that.

Exchange-traded funds offer a convenient way to invest in sectors or niches that interest you. If you'd like to add some gas and oil stocks to your portfolio, the iShares Dow Jones U.S. Oil and Gas Exploration Index ETF (NYSEMKT: IEO ) could save you a lot of trouble. Instead of trying to figure out which companies will perform best, you can use this gas and oil ETF to invest in lots of them simultaneously.
The basics
ETFs often sport lower expense ratios than their mutual fund cousins. The gas and oil ETF's expense ratio -- its annual fee -- is a relatively low 0.47%. The fund is on the small side, too, so if you're thinking of buying, beware of possibly large spreads between its bid and ask prices. Consider using a limit order if you want to buy in to this gas and oil ETF. - [By John Udovich]
At first glance, you might think it strange that we have both the ProShares UltraShort DJ-UBS Crude Oil ETF (NYSEARCA: SCO), a bearish bet on oil, and the iShares Dow Jones US Oil & Gas Ex Index ETF (NYSEARCA: IEO), a more bullish bet on both domestic oil and gas, in our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio. But there is a method to our apparent madness as one can be both bearish and bullish on oil and/or gas at the same time.

The big E&P (exploration and production) and major integrated oil stocks see profits rise and fall with the price of crude. The iShares US Oil & Gas Exploration & Production ETF (IEO) is one way to play this part of the oil patch.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Benjamin Shepherd]
Why is there such a disconnect between oil and gasoline prices? Despite the fact that oil and gasoline make just about everything go and demand has been steadily rising for decades now, oil production has had difficulty keeping pace. And since 2005 most production growth has come from the increased exploitation of shale formations and hydraulic fracturing.
Since 2005, global production of crude oil has grown by 2.3 million barrels per day (MBPD) and over that same time period U.S. production of shale oil has grown by 3.5 MBPD. Not only is the U.S. essentially responsible for all the production global production growth since 2005, it has also made up from 1.2 MPBD of lost production elsewhere in the world.
While the gasoline price spike since October can be largely attributed to seasonal factors traveling increases in the holiday and summer seasons tight global oil production could result in higher gasoline prices becoming a fact of life. Here in the U.S. nearly 75 percent of the oil we consume goes to transportation and higher gasoline and other distillate prices are the only effect mechanism for rationing it.
That pricing mechanism, coupled with rapid advancements in drilling technologies and know-how, has also made it economical to produce once-untouchable oil reserves, such as those in deepwater or in shale formations and oil sands. It has also driven a huge push to increase global oil production in the coming years and created an opportunity to not only profit from the energy boom but also hedge your portfolio against the damaging impact of energy inflation.
One interesting play on that theme is Cameron International (NYSE: CAM). Another issue that Varco has to face is the specter of increasing competition. Cameron International (NYSE: CAM ) has arisen as a big player in the drilling and production systems space, with a particular emphasis on subsea applications like blowout preventers. With Cameron sporting a recent partnership with Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB ) , the combination will have both the expertise and the financial resources to challenge Varco in that niche. More broadly, up-and-coming Forum Energy (NYSE: FET ) has sought to emulate Varco's broad-based services menu, offering remotely operated vehicles for deepwater inspection and construction as well as pipe and cementing materials and a range of subsea systems and equipment. Forum has posted solid results in its brief history, taking steps to continue its fast growth trajectory.

British Petroleum (BP) and Transocean (RIG) are the visible face of the Deepwater Horizon incident that occurred in April 2010, in the Gulf of Mexico. The first it because it was the operator of the platform at the moment of the explosion. The second company provided the platform used for the extraction of oil. However, oil and gas production involves the participation of many more businesses sharing responsibility for one single operation. More often than not, one oil and gas site will involve the participation of an exploration and production, a drilling, and equipment and services firm. And a good relationship between the three is a must for a successful production. That is what seems to have been absent at Deepwater Horizon, as BP and Transocean bore most responsibility, with both claiming Cameron International (CAM) escaped much of the public criticism.

Rather, it is a debt note secured by the United Bank of Switzerland (UBS), and is tied to the Wells Fargo Business Development Company Index (WFBDC) the only index to be made up completely of BDCs. This index is based off of 32 BDC holdings, which the BDCL ETN leverages by 2X.
